INTERSECTION CONFLICT ANALYSIS

Globally, intersections are one of the highest risk components in the road system where an average of 20% of deaths and 30% of serious injuries occur. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable and make up approximately half of the fatalities at intersections. Cyclists and motorcyclists are involved in a substantial proportion of fatal and serious injury crashes at urban priority-controlled and roundabout intersections (up to 40% in Australia).

As road safety agencies are taking on the Towards Zero vision (or Vision Zero), it has been recognised that observing crashes to prevent crashes is simply a reactive approach which makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to achieve the ultimate goals.

METRICS

Traditional traffic safety evaluation approaches are based on chronological crash data and also conventional data collection methods using pavement intrusive counters such as tubes and inductive loops. Despite the robustness of this established technique, new technologies provide opportunities for further improvements in crash predictions and reliable safety measures without need for crash data.

 

Our solution, therefore, employs a combination of drone and closed-circuit television (CCTV) video of the site with advanced 3-dimensional mapping and machine learning technology capture the data safely from an off-road position. The technology is highly sophisticated and enables evaluation of proactive safety surrogate measures as follows:

Volumes

Number of vehicles detected in a defined time period.

Post Encroachment Time

Measure of the time difference between a vehicle leaving the area of encroachment and a conflicting vehicle entering the same area.

GAP

Measure of the time between the rear bumper of the first vehicle and the front bumper of the second vehicle.

Speed

Speed of individual vehicles traversing through the area of interest (Spot or Segment Speed).

Gap Acceptance Time

The median time headway between two successive vehicles in the opposing traffic steam that is accepted by the driver on the side road to enter or cross the main road or for the driver to start overtaking.

Time to Collision

The time required for two vehicles to collide if they continue at their present speed and on the same path.

Classification

Vehicle classes (bicycles, motorbikes, passenger cars, buses etc…)

Stopline Compliance

Percentage of vehicles stopping at or before the stop line at an intersection.

Time Headway

The time between the front bumper of the leading and the front bumper of the following vehicle.
