Level Crossing Removal Project
The Worker Crossing Alert project aimed to enhance safety by alerting workers and drivers of potential hazards at construction site crossings. This solution leveraged Realite Safety Cameras and cloud-based data processing to detect vehicles and activate warning systems in real-time. Initially, video data was processed remotely in the cloud, resulting in a latency of approximately 12 seconds from detection to alert activation.
This processing time was optimised by adjusting the virtual location of cloud servers, reducing latency to around 4 seconds. The refined system used a secure pipeline to transmit video data to Realite's cloud infrastructure, where AI algorithms performed object detection, classification, and tracking. Once a vehicle was detected approaching the crossing, alerts were sent to a Realite Hub, triggering flashing LED warning lights installed at strategic points. The reduced 4-second delay was suitable for this use case, as it provided sufficient time for workers and drivers to respond before the vehicle reached the crossing.
The project highlighted the system's capacity for effective detection and alert delivery, though connectivity issues and hardware demands presented challenges. The findings underscored the importance of optimising data transmission methods and exploring alternative connectivity solutions to further minimise latency and enhance system robustness.
